Abstract:

“Teacher Education has been a point of concern in Ethiopia for many years, and these days, the advancement of technology is an additional concern in teacher education. Recently, a new teacher education framework was released to guide teacher education programs in Ethiopia. This study examined the new teacher education framework, how technology is integrated, and how teacher educators and leaders perceive the intention of technology integration, including its implementation. This is part of a bigger study that used mixed-methods research. Participants were experts who were involved in one way or the other in developing the framework, experts at the Ministry of Education or regional education bureaus, and teacher educators and leaders in the teacher education institutions. 92 teacher educators selected from the 39 colleges of teacher education in Ethiopia, 29 teacher educators working in the centers of excellence universities, and 10 leaders from the colleges of teacher education participated in the study. Document analysis, interviews, and survey questionnaires were used as data collection instruments. The results indicate positive consideration of technology integration at the framework level and a positive perception towards it from the side of teacher educators and leaders. The study concludes that the new teacher education framework has taken one step towards integrating technology. However, the implementation is lagging for many causes such as a lack of trained personnel, infrastructure, and students’ background. It recommends the necessity of devising mechanisms to ensure integration through capacity development and infrastructure amenities.”
