Abstract:

“The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the K-12 setting, especially in literacy education, has yet to be fully realized. Inevitably, teachers play a key role in integrating AI applications into their instruction. Therefore, understanding a teacher’s technological and pedagogical knowledge to use AI for literacy education is crucial. However, less is known about pedagogical approaches to prepare teachers for AI-assisted literacy instruction. Considering this gap, the current section first introduces the Intelligent-technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) framework and its sub-domains. Next, relevant sub-domains are tailored for the implementation of this framework for literacy instruction. In this regard, necessary knowledge and skills are presented for teachers to use AI-based tools for literacy instruction. Further, drawing on the empirical research, we demonstrate the sample practices in which teachers successfully and ethically deploy AI applications for literacy education. Moreover, some key AI applications and their technological and pedagogical affordances for literacy education are suggested. How teachers are equipped with Intelligent-TPACK through effective professional development is also discussed with research directions.”
